RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 is a disease that may cause anxiety, depression, and stress. Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a disease in which stress and psychological factors might negatively affect its course. In this study, we aimed to examine the possible clinical aggregation of the pandemic period on BPS patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 BPS patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 were included. All patients were using medical treatment, and the follow-up period was at least 6 months. According to our clinical follow-up protocol, the BPS patients were given the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Overactive Bladder Form V8 (OAB-V8), and Visual Analog Score (VAS) in every visit. In the sixth month of the pandemic, the clinical course of the patients was questioned by telephone or video interview, and their treatment continuities were questioned. Information was received about the delays in their follow-up and the difficulties in accessing healthcare opportunities. The same questionnaires were filled out and compared with pre-pandemic scores. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients included in the study was 50.2 ± 13.32 (min:20, max:74), 11 were males and 24 were females. The mean follow-up periods were 71.8 ± 35.6 months. All questionnaire scores showed an increase compared to the pre-pandemic period. A statistically significant increase was detected during the pandemic in all sub-units of the KHQ. The VAS and OAB-V8 scores of 16 patients who requested hospital admission were significantly higher than before the pandemic. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the increase in VAS and OAB-V8 scores of the 19 patients who refused to come to the hospital. CONCLUSION: BPS patients have been negatively affected by the emotional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the fear, stress, anxiety, and depression, the symptoms of BPS patients exacerbated, and the patients could not receive the necessary support due to a lack of regular follow-ups.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to determine the ototoxicities of boric acid in alcohol (BAA) and Castellani solutions by means of distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). A total of 28 rats were randomly divided into four groups, each group consisting of 7 animals. Then, 0.1 mL Castellani solution, 0.1 mL BAA (4% boric acid solution prepared with 60% alcohol), 0.2 mL (40 mg/mL) gentamicin and 0.2 mL saline were dropped to right outer ear canals of rats in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, twice a day, for 14 days. DPOAE values obtained on days 0 and 14 were statistically compared for the values obtained at 750-8000 Hz frequencies. A statistically significant decrease was found on day 14 compared to day 0 values in Castellani group at all frequencies (p < 0.05). In BAA group, there was a statistically significant decrease between frequencies 1500 and 8000 Hz on day 14 (p < 0.05).We found that Castellani and BAA were ototoxic. BAA and Castellani solutions should be avoided in patients with tympanic membrane perforations, ventilation tubes and open mastoid cavities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Apnea-related hypoxia, hypercapnia, and blood pressure fluctuations cause production of various proinflammatory cytokines and trigger a vicious cycle that results in vascular endothelial damage and systemic inflammation in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Endothelial function is frequently impaired in OSA even in the absence of significant cardiac or vascular disorders. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the serum endocan and serglycin levels in OSA patients. METHODS: This prospective study included 78 consecutive patients who admitted to the sleep laboratory of a tertiary referral center with the complaints of daytime sleepiness, witnessed sleep apnea, and/or snoring and who underwent all-night polysomnography (PSG). After PSG, the patients were divided into four groups in relation with their apnea-hypopnea indexes. The groups were compared for endocan and serglycin levels and their correlations with OSA severity. The correlations with demographic data and PSG findings were also investigated. RESULTS: The OSA and the control groups had significantly different endocan and serglycin levels ([Formula: see text], for both). On univariate logistic regression analysis, it was found that serglycin and endocan levels and BMI were predictors of OSA. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that endocan and serglycin levels were independent predictors for OSA ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively). CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated that elevated endocan and serglycin levels are predictors for OSA. Furthermore, we have showed for the first time in literature that serglycin is correlated with OSA and is an independent predictor for OSA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the serum calprotectin (SCal) levels and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) values in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: Sixty-seven OSA patients and 46 healthy volunteers without any sleep disorders were included in the study. The patient group was divided into three subgroups according to the severity of OSA. The SCal levels and NLR values were compared among subgroups and between the experimental and control groups. RESULTS: The mean SCal level and NLR value were higher in the study group than in the control group (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, respectively). The SCal levels were significantly higher in patients with severe OSA than in those with moderate and mild OSA (p = 0.004 and p = 0.001, respectively). DISCUSSION: Unlike NLR, the SCal level may inform the severity of OSA and could be used as an indicator for OSA.

RESUMO

OBJECT: To prepare a national guideline for Otorhinolaryngologist who treat allergic rhinitis patients. METHODS: The study was conducted by three authors, namely the writing support team. The support team made the study plan, determined the writing instructions, chose the subgroups including the advisory committee, the advisors for authors and the authors. A workshop was organized at the very beginning to explain the details of the study to the team. Advisors took the chance to meet their coworkers in their subgroups and determined the main headings and subheadings of the guideline, together with the authors. After key words were determined by the authors, literature search was done in various databases. The authors keep in touch with the advisors and the advisors with the advisory committee and the support group at every stage of the study. National and International published articles as well as the abstracts of unpublished studies, imperatively presented in National Congresses, were included in this guideline. Only Guideline and meta-analyses published in last seven years (2013-2017) and randomized controlled studies published in last two years (2015-2017) were included. After all work was completed by the subgroups, support team brought all work together and edited the article. RESULTS: A detailed guideline about all aspects of allergic rhinitis was created. CONCLUSION: The authors believe that this guideline will enable a compact and up-to-date information on allergic rhinitis to healthcare professionals. This guideline is the first in the field of Otolaryngology in Turkey. It should be updated at regular intervals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord scarring is the most crucial obstacle in voice quality after surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid (HA)-collagen nanofibers on the healing of vocal cords after surgical trauma. METHOD: Right vocal cords of 12 New Zealand white rabbits were traumatized, and the experimental group was received 1.08 mg/75 ml topical HA-collagen nanofiber (Gelfix® spray) for 3 days. Three animals in each group were sacrificed on the 7th day, and the remaining of the animals were sacrificed on the 21st day. The laryngeal specimens in the experimental and control groups were examined histopathologically. RESULT: The 7th-day H&E staining evaluation revealed pink, dense, and thin collagen fibers. Besides, the collagen content was scattered and irregular in the experimental group. The 21st-day assessment showed that the collagen bundles in the granulation tissue were almost with the same formation in both of the groups. Masson Trichrome staining on the 7th day of the study showed that the collagen fiber bundles were less frequent in the control group than the experimental group. The 7th-day Van Gieson staining analysis showed that the pattern of reticular fibers was more regular with the parallel formation in the experimental group than the control group. CONCLUSION: HA-collagen nanofiber can be used in diseases that impair voice quality due to the thickening of the lamina propria layer in the vocal cord and impaired viscoelasticity due to fibrosis after tissue trauma.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on voice, the relationship between the required pressure levels in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and voice, and the effects of CPAP therapy on voice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 73 subjects consisting of 53 patients and 20 control subjects were included in the study. The patient group was further divided into low- (Group A) and high- (Group B) pressure groups according to the required pressure level. All subjects underwent acoustic sound analysis to evaluate fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, and noise-to-harmonics ratio (NHR). Acoustic voice analysis was repeated after 3 months of regular CPAP treatment in the patient group. The mean F0, jitter, shimmer, and NHR values of the patient group and control group were compared. Intergroup comparisons were also performed between Group A and the control group, and between Group B and the control group. Finally, before and after CPAP treatment values of mean F0, jitter, shimmer, and NHR were compared in Group A and Group B. RESULTS: The mean shimmer and NHR values of the patient group were significantly higher than the control group (P = 0.01 and P = 0.023, respectively). The mean shimmer and NHR values of Group B were statistically higher than the control group (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001, respectively). The mean jitter, shimmer, and NHR values after CPAP treatment were significantly lower than those measured before CPAP treatment in Group B (P = 0.003, P = 0.001, and P = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Voice is negatively affected in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients who require high pressure in CPAP treatment. CPAP treatment leads to improved voice in these patients.

RESUMO

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of chronic sleep deprivation on mucociliary clearance, which is the primary defence mechanism of the upper airway tract and nasal mucosal histology. Forty-two Wistar Albino rats (250-300 g), 8 or 12 weeks old, were randomly assigned into three groups as follows. The first sleep-deprivation group consisted of 14 rats (A), another 14 of them were assigned to platform group (B), and the remaining 14 were included to the home cage control group (C). For the two deprivation groups (A and B), the modified multiple platform method (MMPM) was used to induce sleep deprivation for 21 days. Tc-99m MAA rhinoscintigraphy was performed to assess mucociliary clearance and the nasal histopathological changes of the sacrificed rats were also examined. Mucociliary clearance was significantly higher in sleep deprivation (A) and deprivation control (B) groups than the control group (C) (p = .037). The ratio of columnar ciliary was significantly higher in group A and B than in the control group (p = .003). The transitional epithelial ratio in groups A and B was also significantly increased compared with group C (p = .04). The control group's squamous epithelial ratio was increased compared to the sleep-deprived groups (p = .003). There was a significantly increased inflammatory response in the ciliated columnar epithelium in groups A and B compared to group C (p = .02). For the first time in the literature, we demonstrated that chronic sleep deprivation has caused a significant increase in mucociliary clearance speed and in the number of ciliary cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess whether nivolumab is ototoxic in rats and whether this ototoxicity is dose-dependent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve rats were divided into two groups: Group 1 (control group, 6 rats, 12 ears) received intraperitoneal saline for 14 days. Group 2 (study group, 6 rats, 12 ears) and received two doses of 3 mg/kg intraperitoneal nivolumab within 14 days. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were performed preoperatively and 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. We compared between the groups, morphologic appearance of spiral ganglion cells and organ of Corti and density of spiral ganglion cells (measured with conventional light microscope connected to a personal computer). RESULTS: In our control group, both spiral ganglion and organ of corti had a normal morphological appearance. In our study group, spiral ganglion cells had a normal morphological appearance. However, some sections showed possibly mild degenerative changes in the organ of corti. Of 12 samples in the study group, four had a significant loss of density of spiral ganglion cells compared to the control group. The baseline ABR thresholds did not significantly differ between the groups (p=0.713). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding ABR thresholds at week 4 (p=0.347). However, a statistically significant difference was observed in the ABR thresholds at week 8 (p=0.045). CONCLUSION: The results of our study showed that nivolumab treatment has ototoxic effects. Based on our results, we recommend monitoring the changes in the hearing ability of chemotherapy patients.

RESUMO

Cisplatin, a pharmacological agent widely used for treating many cancers, may cause serious side effects including ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and peripheral neuropathy. The present study aimed to investigate whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP) protects against cisplatin ototoxicity. Eight rats (16 ears) were divided into 2 groups: control group (4 rats, 8 ears) that received intratympanic saline and study group (4 rats, 8 ears) that received intratympanic PRP. Cisplatin (10 mg/day intraperitoneally) or vehicle was administered 2 times per day to the animals. Auditory brainstem responses were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively on day 4 and at week 3. The authors compared the morphological appearances of spiral ganglion cells and the organ of Corti and the density of spiral ganglion cells between treatment groups. The number of outer hair cells in the organ of Corti significantly decreased in the control group compared with that in the PRP group. Although no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups regarding ABR thresholds on day 4 (P = 0.083, a statistically significant difference was observed between groups at week 3 (P = 0.038). Our results suggest that PRP can prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The inflammatory and vascular disorders have been proposed in the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy (BP). Several studies investigated the role of inflammation and ischemia in BP using white blood cell (WBC) count and its subtypes. Here, we aimed to investigate lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in BP. METHODS: The study was conducted on 76 patients with BP and 60 healthy controls. The comparison of LDH, NLR, MPV, and PLR was made between groups. The relationships between LDH, NLR, MPV, and PLR were also investigated. RESULTS: The mean LDH concentrations and NLR were significantly high in BP group than in control group (p < 0.01, p < 0.05, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups in MPV and PLR (p = 0.195, p = 0.263, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our results support the diagnostic value of high LDH concentrations in BP patients. Further studies are needed to investigate the relationship between LDH and the severity and prognosis of BP.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic sinonasal surgery (ESS) has changing over the years in parallel with the developments in endoscopy devices, video-imaging techniques, and surgical instruments. In the present study we investigated whether the indications of patients who underwent surgery over a period of 25 years have accommodated to these changes. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 1173 patients who underwent surgery in our clinic from 1994 through 2007, and 954 patients who underwent surgery from 2008 through 2018. The patients were divided into three groups as follows: chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (CRSwNP), chronic rhinosinusitis without polyps (CRSsNP), and others. The changes in the indications during the first 14 years and the following 11 years were compared, and the results were statistically evaluated. RESULTS: A significant decrease was observed in the number of patients who underwent surgery following the diagnosis of CRSsNP (p<0.001). In addition, a statistically significant increase was found in CRSwNP (p<0.001) and other (p<0.001) indications. CONCLUSION: When ESS indications identified in our clinic were reviewed, it was observed that the increasing trend in CRSwNP rate in the first 14 years continued, there was a significant increase in non-CRS indications in the last 11 years, and there has been an increase in patients with fungal sinusitis, especially in this group.

RESUMO

Objective This study aimed to investigate the abnormal high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings in cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (CCOM) patients preoperatively and the coexistence of abnormal HRCT findings with facial canal dehiscence (FCD) observed intraoperatively to identify the predictive factors associated with FCD. Methods The medical records of 151 CCOM patients who had undergone tympanomastoidectomy at our center were retrospectively examined in terms of the patients' age and gender, preoperative HRCT findings [scutum defect, posterior wall of external auditory canal (PWEAC) defect, lateral semicircular canal (LSSC) defect, tegmen defect, and sigmoid plate erosion]. Operation records containing information about FCD were also analyzed. Results The prevalence of FCD was found to be 33.8% (51/151). There was a significant correlation between the presence of scutum, PWEAC, LSSC, and tegmen defects and the presence of FCD. However, no statistically significant correlation was found between the presence of sigmoid plate erosion and the presence of FCD. The results of regression analysis of the coexisting pathologic findings for FCD showed that the risk of FCD was highest in patients with LSSC + scutum defects (34.3-fold increase), followed by LSSC + PWEAC defects (31.6-fold increase). Conclusion Our study revealed that the presence of scutum, PWEAC, LSSC, and tegmen defects on HRCT indicates a higher risk of FCD preoperatively. This risk is even greater when multiple abnormal findings coexist.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether septoplasty is an effective factor on the voice in patients with varying degrees of nasal septum deviation. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, Ear Nose Throat Clinic, Ankara, Turkey, from November 2018 to March 2019. METHODOLOGY: A total of 69 patients formed groups I, II and III. Groups I, II and III consisted of patients with mild, moderate and severe nasal deviation, respectively. All patients underwent septoplasty under general anesthesia. Subjective and objective voice analyses were performed for each patient preoperatively and at the postoperative third month. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference between the mean pre- and postoperative voice handicap index-30 (VHI-30) scores in group I and group II. Postoperative mean VHI-30 scores were significantly lower in group III. In groups I and II, the differences between the mean pre- and postoperative fundamental frequency (F0), frequency perturbation (jitter), amplitude perturbation (shimmer) and noise-to-harmonics ratio (NHR) values were not statistically significant. While the differences between the mean preoperative and postoperative F0, jitter and NHR values in group III were not statistically significant, mean postoperative shimmer value was lower than preoperative one with significantly difference. CONCLUSION: Septoplasty affects the voice positively in patients having severe septum deviation.

RESUMO

Abstract Introduction Recently it has been reported that a high preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio may be related to increased recurrence risk, tumor aggressiveness, and worsened prognosis in various malignancies. Objective The objective of this research is to explore whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in parotid tumors may or may not be used as a cancer marker. Methods This retrospective research has been conducted on a total of 228 patients consisting of 83 healthy persons and 145 patients with a mass in the parotid gland, who applied to a tertiary referral center and underwent surgery. Patients have been divided into two groups by their histopathological findings as malignant or benign parotid tumor. A third group consisting of healthy people has been defined as the control group. Also the malignant parotid tumor group has been divided into two subgroups as early stage and advanced stage. The groups have been compared in terms of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-lymphocyte ratio and other laboratory data. Results The average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio values of malignant parotid tumor, benign parotid tumor, healthy control groups were 2.51, 2.01, 1.79 respectively and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between advanced stage and early stage parotid tumor groups in terms of average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio value (p = 0.782). In dual comparisons, the platelet-lymphocyte ratio value of patients in the malignant group was found out to be statistically significantly higher than that of benign and control groups (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001 respectively). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge our research is the first in the medical literature comparing neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in patients with parotid tumor. neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio can serve as cost-effective, repeatable, easily accessible, and helpful inflammatory markers in order to distinguish patients with malignant parotid tumor from healthy people.

OBJECTIVES: Calprotectin, a protein released by neutrophils, has been used in many studies as a biomarker showing the presence of inflammation. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between serum calprotectin level and response to the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). METHODS: The present study is a prospective, cross-sectional historical cohort study. The study group consisted of 44 patients with ISSHL, and the control group consisted of 41 healthy volunteers without ear pathology. At the same time, patients in the study group were divided into three groups according to the response to ISSHL treatment (recovered, partially recovered, unrecovered). The relationship between the groups was statistically evaluated in terms of serum calprotectin levels. RESULTS: The mean serum calprotectin value was 75.67±19.48 ng/mL in the study group and 50.24±29.14 ng/mL in the control group (P=0.001). Serum calprotectin value according to the severity of hearing loss in the mild, moderate and severe was 66.20±8.82, 70.35±16.77, and 91.23±19.73 ng/mL, respectively. Serum calprotectin value in the severe group was significantly higher compared to the moderate and mild groups (P=0.004, P=0.001, respectively). Serum calprotectin value according to the treatment response in the recovered, partially recovered and unrecovered groups was 63.36±11.54, 80.17±12.06, and 85.33±22.33 ng/mL, respectively. Serum calprotectin value in the recovered group was significantly lower compared to the partially recovered and unrecovered groups (P=0.002, P=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Serum calprotectin value informs the clinician about both the severity of hearing loss and the response to treatment. Hence, serum calprotectin can be used as an important biomarker in ISSHL patients for the determination of the prognosis of disease.

RESUMO

The goal of this study was to investigate the association between various sinonasal anatomical variations and the morphological features of lateral nasal bone, using paranasal computerized tomography (PNCT) sections. Two hundred and fifty patients who underwent a PNCT scan because of a prediagnosis of nasal septum deviation or sinusitis were included in the study. For each patient, presence of the following anatomical variations was determined on CT sections: length and thickness of nasal bone, thickness of intermediate nasal bone, pneumatized middle turbinate, paradox middle turbinate, Agger nasi cell, Haller cell, Onodi cell, supraorbital cell, pneumatized uncinate process, and nasal septal deviation. The effect of each anatomical variation on the length and thickness of the lateral nasal bone was investigated. The patients with bilateral pneumatized middle turbinate and the patients with bilateral Agger nasi cell had a thinner lateral nasal bone both on the right and the left sides compared to those without. The patients with bilateral Onodi cell and Agger nasi cell had a longer lateral nasal bone both on the right and the left sides compared to those without. The nasal bone thickness was significantly thicker on the deviation side than the contralateral nasal bone. The nasal bone length was significantly longer on the side of the septum deviation. In this study, we found that sex, presence of Agger nasi and Onodi cells, pneumatization of middle turbinate, and direction of nasal septal deviation influenced the morphology of the nasal bone. For successful nasal surgery, careful examination of preoperative anatomical variations is very important.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Recently it has been reported that a high preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio may be related to increased recurrence risk, tumor aggressiveness, and worsened prognosis in various malignancies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research is to explore whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in parotid tumors may or may not be used as a cancer marker. METHODS: This retrospective research has been conducted on a total of 228 patients consisting of 83 healthy persons and 145 patients with a mass in the parotid gland, who applied to a tertiary referral center and underwent surgery. RESULTS: The average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio values of malignant parotid tumor, benign parotid tumor, healthy control groups were 2.51, 2.01, 1.79 respectively and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between advanced stage and early stage parotid tumor groups in terms of average neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio value (p=0.782). In dual comparisons, the platelet-lymphocyte ratio value of patients in the malignant group was found out to be statistically significantly higher than that of benign and control groups (p<0.001 and p=0.001 respectively). CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge our research is the first in the medical literature comparing neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in patients with parotid tumor. neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio can serve as cost-effective, repeatable, easily accessible, and helpful inflammatory markers in order to distinguish patients with malignant parotid tumor from healthy people.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Many anatomical factors are known to cause obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), but only few studies have examined the relationship between the morphology of pterygoid hamulus (PH), upper airway, and OSAS severity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of OSAS and PH morphology and other anatomical variations of the upper airway. METHODS: The data of the patients who underwent polysomnography and diagnosed with OSAS were retrospectively reviewed, and those who underwent paranasal sinus computed tomography were determined. The patients were divided into three groups according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores obtained from the polysomnography (mild, moderate, and severe). The relationship between PH thickness, length and interpterygoid distance, and the severity of AHI was investigated. RESULTS: Seventy-four patients were included in the study. In patients with severe OSAS (1.83 ± 0.29 mm), the PH bone thickness was significantly thicker compared to those with mild OSAS (1.59 ± 0.36 mm) (p = 0.03). When the interpterygoid distance and its ratio to the velopharyngeal length were examined, it was found significantly shorter in patients with severe OSAS than mild cases (p < 0.001; p = 0.045, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our results showed that OSAS severity was associated with hamulus thickness, interpterygoid distance, and the ratio of interpterygoid distance to VL. Our study provides further insight into the pathophysiology of sleep apnea, suggesting that morphometric evaluation of the pterygoid hamulus and upper airway measurements can assist clinicians in stratifying and determining the best treatment options for patients with OSAS.

RESUMO

Objective Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors that have been recently introduced for the systemic treatment of head and neck cancers offer the advantage of fewer side effects and more effective treatment than chemotherapy drugs. A review of the literature shows that the ototoxic side effects of the PD-1 inhibitor have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the PD-1 inhibitor has ototoxic activity using both electrophysiological and histopathological methods. Methods A total of 24 rats, 12 for the study group, and 12 for the control group were included in the study. The study group was administered the PD-1 inhibitor. The auditory brainstem responses (ABR) of the study and control groups were evaluated. At the end of the study, all animals were sacrificed, and their cochleae were examined by immunohistochemical staining. Results In the study group, the ABR values were 13.95 ± 2.70 before treatment, 15.83 ± 1.94 at week 4 of treatment (p=0.024), and 15.00 ± 1.06 at week 7 (p=0.157). Furthermore, according to immunohistochemical staining, the cochlear hair cells were reduced in the study group compared to the control group. Conclusion It was determined that the PD-1 inhibitor showed ototoxic activity during the course of treatment, but this was spontaneously resolved during follow-up. The clinical significance of these findings should be supported by human studies.
